I think I know what I need to move up on my want list for cycling. Some type of heart rate gadget. All I see on blogs are guys talking about the zones. I have no zone and it would be nice to see what my zone is. I hear Harp talk about it on his blog and I also hear a lot from Jon(a follower of the flatwater cycling blog) talk about all the time. Sounds like something that would really help with training.
Speaking of training, tonight was a little rough. I didn't get started until little after 10 thinking the kids were in bed. Well about 30 min in I hear a lot of running footsteps upstairs. So I stopped and put the kids back to bed. Back I went on the bike and about another 25 min I hear them running around again. Maybe next time I'll think twice before chasing them around the house before they go to bed.

I'm getting some good zoneage. My problem is that I don't know what to base my zones on. My HR monitor does the old 220-age calculation for Max Heart rate and gives percentages based on that number. However, Friel and others say that your training zones should be based on your lactate threshold heart rate. This number is obtained during a test.
I have not performed this test. Harp? Others? How did you establish your zones?
What kind of HR monitor did you get?
For Christmas two years ago I got the Polar S150. I used it alot the first year and not much last year.
I have been getting my zones from a percentage of my max heart rate. Friel's right when the best and most acurate are off a lactate threshold test but I haven't done that yet. I'm pretty close to hiring a coach to help me plan my workouts and get the tests done.
Here is where I got my training zones from:
